West Vancouver Rain Garden Replaces Pavement and Captures Rainwater Runoff on Busy Roadway

Positive environmental outcome of pilot project means that other rain gardens will be built

15th Street in West Vancouver is a major north-south connector route that links the Upper Levels Highway to Marine Drive. When this busy road was reconstructed, a rain garden was incorported in the right-of-way to have a positive environmental outcome. The success of this pilot project is leading to other rain garden applications within the District.

Landscape-based solution for rainwater management will be featured in the 'Showcasing Innovation in Greater Vancouver Series"

Located at an elementary school opposite Cougar Canyon Environmental Reserve in the Corporation of Delta, this site has a direct impact on the quality of Delta's primary salmon-bearing stream. The entire school population was involved in the creation of the Cougar Canyon Rain Garden, which infiltrates rainwater runoff from the school parking lot.

Delta Embraces Green Infrastructure to Resolve Problems and Create Amenities

The Municipality of Delta has completed numerous examples of rain gardens and infiltration swales on public rights-of-way. A number of these projects were presented at the 2007 Water Balance Model Partners Forum to illustrate the benefits of landscape-based solutions to solve drainage issues and create community amenities.
